Four Antonello da Messina panels stolen from MuMe museum in Messina on Ferragosto

Aug 16, 2026

The segment covers the overnight theft of four Renaissance panels by Antonello da Messina from the MuMe regional museum in Messina, Sicily, on August 15 during Italy's Ferragosto holiday and the La Vara religious procession. It details the stolen works—three panels from the San Gregorio Polyptych and a double-sided Pietà panel—and notes the recent recovery of three French masterpieces in Parma. Correspondent Sema Gupta in Rome provides context on the heist, the artist's ties to the city, and reactions from Italy's culture minister Alessandro Giuli, the mayor of Messina, and the museum director. The report references an earlier Italian state purchase of an Antonello work for around 12-15 million and speculates on possible black-market motives.
