Pillen directs agencies to cut spending for FY 2026 and next biennium tax relief

Jul 14, 2026

KNEB TV reports Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen directing state agencies, boards, and commissions to identify additional spending reductions. The directive aims to sustain reduced income tax rates and property tax relief amid higher-than-expected refunds. In FY 2026 the state paid $307 million more in refunds than anticipated. Appropriations for the current fiscal year and the FY 2027-2029 biennium will be reduced further. Agencies must submit monthly reports starting end of July detailing savings; the State Budget Division will review them and approve new positions or hires.
